What is aromatherapy? Experts say that the quick and simple answer is it’s the study and application of essential oils. It is also referred to as Essential Oil Therapy, and that’s how a lot of modern practitioners like to call it. This modality encompasses the holistic application and use of essential oils to support the health and well-being of the individual. (Shutes & Galper, 2020)

This now begs to ask the next question. What are essential oils? They are a plant’s life force, they help regulate itself and add overall wellness, and because our bodies are so compatible with plants, they work in much the same way for humans. They are extracted from leaves, roots, shrubs, flowers, rind, and resin and the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they were extracted. There seems to be a growing interest in them these days but essential oils aren’t exactly new. In fact, they’ve been here for thousands of years. They’ve been used for health and wellness in history, for cosmetic purposes, and for their emotional and spiritual uplifting properties.

Essential oils are safe and they work, if you use them properly. However, not all essential oils are created equal. In fact, many essential oil companies have sprung up in the last decade. As there are no regulations on labelling, we should educate ourselves when we are choosing to purchase essential oils, especially if we are interested in their beneficial action, not just how they smell. The oils that I use in my practice are from the world leader in the industry, Young Living. They have set the standard for purity and potency for over 25 years. The oils are not a silver bullet. As renowned functional medicine doctor, Mark Hyman MD, always says, "if you want to be healthy, you have to make that choice every single day and take action." Remove the bad and then add the good. Small steps and healthy daily habits towards supporting pillars of health such as sleep, diet, movement, meditation, and community make a huge difference and I teach people how to support the healthy habits by turning to nature and essential oils.

So of what value is aromatherapy to the human body and our lives? Just as food is information, the plant extracts offer hundreds of chemical constituents that support and modulate the human body to reach balance in order to regulate health. This is so valuable because we are exposed to many health threats and a lot of negativity on a daily basis. How is this achieved? Through the proper use of authentic, and unadulterated essential oils. Cheap isn’t good and good isn’t cheap and when a wellness action is desired, it is important to choose a product with integrity and be guided by one who understands the practice. I offer both.
